Bodegas Mengoba
The Pure Essence of Bierzo • Artisanal Viticulture
"Minimal intervention and maximum respect for the biodiversity of Leonese soil: Gregory Pérez's return to the origin."
Wines with Terroir Soul
Located in San Juan de Carracedo, Bodegas Mengoba is the reflection of Gregory Pérez's humanistic vision. After training in Bordeaux and working at Château Cos d’Estournel, Gregory settled in Bierzo in 2007 to recover old vineyards in mountain areas. His work focuses on precision viticulture where altitude and decomposed slate soils define each label, following the quality standards of the D.O.P. Bierzo.
Mengoba's philosophy is a return to the origin: traditional plowing with animals to avoid compaction, zero use of herbicides, and winemaking that uses large wooden foudres. This approach has been widely recognized by critics such as The Wine Advocate (Luis Gutiérrez), highlighting the purity and tension of their Mencía and Godello.
Profile and Style
It is characterized by its mineral savoriness and a silky texture. Gregory uses rarely seen native varieties, whose recovery is essential for regional biodiversity according to the Plataforma Vinea de Castilla y León, achieving whites with volume and reds with a vibrant Atlantic freshness.
Signature Pairing
The reds pair well with Botillo del Bierzo, a product with its own PGI, matured meats, and small game. The whites, with their mouthfeel, masterfully accompany baked fatty fish.
"My goal is to make wines that speak of the place where they are born, without chemical makeup, just fruit and Leonese landscape."
— Gregory Pérez, Winemaker.
