Bodegas Protos
The Soul of Ribera del Duero
"To Be First: The legend of Peñafiel that defined the prestige of Ribera del Duero through excellence and a bold vision for the future."
Protos: Living History of Spanish Wine
Founded in 1927 as the region's first winery, Bodegas Protos (from the Greek "First") is the institution that gave its name to what we now know as the D.O. Ribera del Duero. Its headquarters, excavated beneath the imposing Peñafiel Castle, houses more than 2 kilometers of natural galleries where the wine rests in perfect conditions.
The winery combines this historical legacy with the architectural avant-garde of its new facility, designed by the studio of Pritzker Prize winner Richard Rogers (RSHP). The result is a portfolio that respects the power of Tinta del País, achieving outstanding scores in guides such as Guía Peñín.
Pillars of Quality
Terroir and Altitude
Vineyards located on limestone plateaus at over 800 meters in altitude. According to studies by the OIV, the extreme thermal oscillation at these altitudes is key for slow ripening and vibrant acidity.
Barrel Selection
Use of fine-grained French and American oak. The constant renewal of the barrel park guarantees complexity without masking the purity of the Tempranillo grape.
Collection of Labels
From the freshness of their Roble to the meditation of their great Reservas, recognized by The Wine Advocate:
