Wines of Argentina
Altitude and Andean Purity
"Wines of pure, intense expression, shaped by the geology of the Andes and the clarity of its sky."
The Strength of the Cordillera
Argentine winemaking combines soils of alluvial origin with a continental climate, under the regulation of the National Institute of Viticulture (INV). Its vineyards range from about 800 meters to over 3,000 meters above sea level, and the large temperature swing between day and night preserves acidity and boosts color and tannins. Andean snowmelt water irrigates most of the vineyards.
From the calcareous plots of Gualtallary and Paraje Altamira in the Uco Valley to the old clays of Agrelo and Las Perdices in Luján de Cuyo, each terroir tells a different story. At La Cava Shop we select labels from Andean viticulture, from everyday varietals to collector's pieces with cellaring potential. Icons of the Terroir
Malbec: The Global Standard-Bearer
In the Uco Valley (Tupungato, Tunuyán and San Carlos), Malbec shows its most vertical and mineral profile: violets, fresh black fruit, graphite and velvety tannins. The grape is promoted internationally through Wines of Argentina.
Luján de Cuyo: The First DOC
This historic Mendoza region was Argentina's first controlled designation of origin and is the cradle of ripe, sumptuous Malbec, with a fleshy palate, sweet plum and touches of vanilla from oak aging.
Torrontés: The Pearl of Salta
From the Calchaquí Valleys, in Cafayate, this native criolla grape offers an intense floral profile (orange blossom, jasmine) with hints of grapefruit and peach skin. To learn about the geography of these extreme-altitude vineyards, see the Salta Wine Route.
Patagonia: Southern Elegance
In the cold valleys of Río Negro and Neuquén, with constant winds, structured Pinot Noir, deep Merlot and Chardonnays of natural acidity and great aromatic delicacy are made.
Sommelier Questions
What is the cellaring potential of a high-end Malbec?
High-end Argentine reds from high-altitude plots in the Uco Valley or Luján de Cuyo have good tannic structure and freshness, and can evolve in the bottle for many years, often a decade or more.
What makes Argentina's high-altitude wines special?
At higher altitude solar radiation is more intense and the temperature swing between day and night is larger, which gives thick-skinned grapes with plenty of color and tannin, and preserves natural acidity.
Education and Wine Certification
