Vinho Verde: Excellence from Portugal

Vinho Verde

Pure Freshness

"From the lush landscape of Entre-Douro-e-Minho to your glass: young, vibrant wines with that natural effervescence that defines Portugal's Atlantic elegance and identity."

The Secret of Northwest Portugal

Vinho Verde is one of Europe's oldest and most unique Protected Designations of Origin (DOP), located in the Entre-Douro-e-Minho sub-region. As certified by the Comissão de Viticultura da Região dos Vinhos Verdes (CVRVV), the name "verde" (green) pays homage to both the perennial greenery of its river valleys and the tradition of consuming these wines young, at the peak of their freshness.

The close proximity to the Atlantic Ocean and predominantly granite soils impart a saline minerality and vibrant acidity to these wines. This distinctive enological profile, widely cataloged by the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (IVV) and the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV), makes Vinho Verde the quintessential summer aperitif and pairing.

Noble Grape Varieties and Terroir

Alvarinho

The flagship grape variety of the Monção e Melgaço sub-region. It produces wines with great body, aromatic complexity of peach, citrus, and mineral notes. It frequently receives the highest scores in evaluations from publications such as Decanter.

Loureiro

The aromatic expression par excellence of the Lima Valley. It stands out for its pronounced floral aroma of orange blossom, acacia, and sweet lime notes. Renowned critics like Jancis Robinson highlight Loureiro as the ultimate varietal purity of Minho.

Trajadura & Arinto

Essential native varieties in traditional blends. Trajadura contributes richness and body on the palate, while Arinto supports the structure with its crisp acidity, in line with WSET specifications.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vinho Verde

What exactly is Vinho Verde?

It is a Protected Designation of Origin from northwestern Portugal. It does not refer to a greenish color, but to the youth of the wine and the green environment of the region. It is characterized by its freshness, low alcohol content, and very fruity profile.

Is Vinho Verde always a white wine?

Although whites are the most popular internationally, the DOP also produces excellent fruity rosés and light reds with vibrant acidity. The GuildSomm technical guide extensively documents the stylistic diversity of the region.

Why does it sometimes have bubbles or 'aguja'?

That subtle effervescence on the tongue is called 'aguja' (a needle or prickle). Originally it was produced by malolactic fermentation in the bottle, but nowadays winemakers actively maintain it to enhance the wine's vivacity, following guidelines promoted by Portugal's tourism and enology organizations.
