Vinho Verde: Excellence from Portugal

Vinho Verde

Freshness in its Purest State

"From the lush landscape of Minho to your glass: young, vibrant wines with that natural spritz that defines Portugal's Atlantic elegance."

The Secret of Northwest Portugal

Vinho Verde is a Protected Designation of Origin (DOP) located in the Entre-Douro-e-Minho region. According to the Comissão de Viticultura da Região dos Vinhos Verdes (CVRVV), its name pays tribute to the youth of the wine and the infinite greenness of its geography. These wines are a global icon of Atlantic viticulture, recognized by the OIV as a unique style of exuberant freshness.

The direct influence of the Atlantic Ocean and the predominantly granitic soils give these wines an unmistakable saline minerality, a technical characteristic highlighted by the Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho (IVV) of Portugal.

Noble Grape Varieties and Terroir

Alvarinho

The queen grape variety of Monção e Melgaço. It offers superior structure, notes of peach and ripe citrus, evaluated with high scores by Decanter critics.

Loureiro

The aromatic essence of the Lima Valley. It provides floral intensity with clear hints of orange blossom, a profile that Jancis Robinson describes as the ultimate purity of Minho.

Trajadura & Arinto

Fundamental varieties in traditional blends, contributing mouthfeel and balanced acidity essential for WSET standards.

Frequently Asked Questions about Vinho Verde

Is Vinho Verde always a white wine?

While whites are the most famous, the DOP produces excellent rosés and young reds. The technical guide from GuildSomm details the resurgence of the region's traditional reds.

Why does it sometimes have bubbles?

That slight effervescence is called 'aguja' (spritz). Originally a result of malolactic fermentation, today it is intentionally preserved following methods standardized by Portugal's wine tourism promotion.
