01. A Family Winery in Toledo
Bodegas García de Lara is in Villarrubia de Santiago, in the province of Toledo. The family estate, Finca Villalobillos, dates back to 1878 and today covers about 284 hectares. In 2017 the next generation of the family relaunched the winery with a clear idea: to focus on single plots from its oldest vineyards, many of them planted pie franco, that is, on their own roots and ungrafted. The wines carry the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla designation.
Its best-known wine is the Airén Pie Franco, from vines planted in 1935 in Corral de Almaguer, at about 700 meters of altitude: proof that Airén, a grape that usually gives neutral wines, can produce whites of character when grown at low yields in old vineyards.
