"Since 1580, Argiano has been a guardian of elegance in Montalcino. Its wines are an ode to balance: powerful yet silky, historic yet contemporary."
History and Terroir of Montalcino
Located in the southwest of Montalcino, the historic Argiano estate covers more than 100 hectares, about 57 of them vineyards, around a Renaissance villa. It has produced wine for more than four centuries and is one of the founding wineries of the Brunello di Montalcino Consortium.
Its mid-altitude location, with breezes from the Tyrrhenian coast and the natural protection of Monte Amiata, favors a good temperature range and the gradual ripening of Sangiovese (known locally as Brunello), with aromatic richness and vibrant acidity.
In 2023, the Argiano Brunello di Montalcino 2018 was named Wine of the Year by Wine Spectator magazine, a recognition that put the winery at the center of the Italian wine scene.

The Wines of the Estate
Brunello di Montalcino
Made from Sangiovese, it is aged about 30 months in large Slavonian and French oak casks (botti) of between 10 and 50 hectoliters, plus additional rest in the bottle. It offers ripe red cherry, violets, leather, blond tobacco and an earthy minerality, with firm, polished tannins and great cellaring ability. Available in Annata 2017 (and Magnum), Riserva 2019, Riserva 2016 (and Magnum), Riserva 2015, Riserva 2013 and Riserva 2010.
Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Suolo
The expression of a specific vineyard on the estate, for those seeking the fullest expression of terroir. Available in Vigna del Suolo 2019 and Magnum 2018.
Solengo: the Super Tuscan Revolution
Created in the mid-1990s under the impetus of the winemaker Giacomo Tachis, Solengo (which in Tuscan dialect means "lone boar") is an international blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Merlot, aged in French oak. It is dense, deep ruby in color, with notes of blackcurrant, bitter chocolate, black pepper and sweet spices. Available in Solengo 2020 Double Magnum.
Rosso di Montalcino: Freshness and Typicity
Considered Brunello's "younger brother", the Rosso di Montalcino 2021 comes from Sangiovese from younger vineyards and shorter aging in wood. It is a vibrant, approachable red of fresh red fruit, crisp acidity and friendly tannins, very food-friendly.
NC - Non Confunditur
Its Latin name means "Unique and Unmistakable" and honors the historic motto of the Gaetani Lovatelli family. It combines the strength of Sangiovese with the roundness of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Syrah: a broad wine with soft tannins and expressive fruit.
Frequently Asked Questions about Argiano
What is the cellaring potential of an Argiano Brunello?
Thanks to its tannic structure and natural acidity, an Argiano Brunello di Montalcino kept at controlled temperature and humidity can evolve in the bottle for 15 to 30 years, developing tertiary notes of truffle, leather, fine woods and spices.
What sets Solengo apart from the winery's traditional wines?
Brunello and Rosso di Montalcino are 100% Sangiovese under their appellation rules. Solengo is an international-style 'Super Tuscan', with varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petit Verdot and Merlot, in a more robust, black-fruit style.
What is the ideal pairing for Argiano wines?
For Brunello and Solengo, well-marbled grilled cuts of meat (such as Bistecca alla Fiorentina), large game stews or aged cheeses such as Pecorino Toscano. For Rosso di Montalcino and Non Confunditur, pappardelle with veal ragù, porcini mushroom risottos and fine cured meats. See the guide to wines for Italian food.
Is it necessary to decant these wines?
For young vintages of Brunello and Solengo, decanting for 1 to 2 hours is recommended. For mature vintages over 15 years old, open the bottle an hour ahead and pour gently into wide glasses.
