Orange Wine
Skin Maceration • Amber • Ancestral Purity
"Neither white, nor red, nor rosé. Orange wine is a return to the roots of viticulture: the strength of white grape skins transformed into structure, texture, and mystery."
The Magic of Skin Contact
Orange Wine is not a passing fad, but the rebirth of an ancient technique. Unlike a conventional white wine where the pomace is immediately discarded, in orange wines, the white grape skins ferment with the must. This process, known as skin maceration, allows the extraction of tannins, pigments, and aromatic compounds that would normally only be found in a red wine.
At La Cava Shop, we curate examples that are true works of art of minimal intervention. These wines, often associated with natural viticulture, offer superior microbiological stability thanks to the natural antioxidants present in the grape skins, often reducing the need for added sulfites.
Sensory Profile: Beyond the Amber Color
A high-quality orange wine offers a complexity unattainable for direct-press whites. On the nose, it is common to find notes of dried apricot, Earl Grey tea, toasted hazelnuts, and hints of honey. On the palate, the presence of tannins provides a structure that makes them ideal companions for our selection of exclusive red wines, sharing with them that sense of body and persistence.
Gastronomy and "Orange Wine"
Its versatility at the table is legendary. Thanks to its acidity and tannic load, orange wine can be paired with dishes that often "annihilate" other wines, such as spicy Southeast Asian cuisine or dishes with complex ferments.
Frequently Asked Questions about Orange Wine
Is orange wine the same as rosé wine?
No. Rosé is made with red grapes with little skin contact. Orange wine is made with white grapes with extensive skin contact. To understand more about technical categorizations, visit Jancis Robinson's encyclopedia.
How to store an open bottle of orange wine?
Due to their tannic structure, they are usually more resistant to oxidation than typical whites. They can last 3 to 5 days refrigerated.
