Marqués de Riscal
Elciego, Álava • Founded in 1858 • D.O.Ca. Rioja
"Where time stands still and the avant-garde comes to life. Marqués de Riscal is the bridge between Bordeaux heritage and Frank Gehry's architectural genius."
Heirs to the Bordeaux Tradition
Founded by Camilo Hurtado de Amézaga, Marqués de Riscal is not just a winery; it is the origin of modern wine in Rioja Alavesa. It was the first institution to implement French winemaking techniques on Spanish soil, under the guidance of Bordeaux masters, setting a standard of quality that persists to this day. Its commitment to the purity of the terroir is reflected in its iconic golden mesh, a global symbol of prestige and authenticity recognized by the most demanding collectors.
Over more than a century and a half, the firm has reinvented itself without losing its artisanal soul. From the construction of the impressive architectural complex of the "City of Wine," designed by the celebrated architect Frank Gehry, to its pioneering ecological sustainability projects, Marqués de Riscal remains at the forefront of global oenology.

Cult Selection
Marqués de Riscal Reserva
The undisputed standard-bearer of the house. Made primarily with Tempranillo grapes combined with Graciano and Mazuelo, it stands out for its refined balsamic balance, subtle notes of ripe black fruit, licorice, and silky tannins after a 24-month aging period in American oak barrels, strictly following the historical parameters of the Reserva category. A versatile wine, perfect for pairing with grilled red meats, lamb, and aged cheeses.
Gran Reserva: Centenarian Vines
From old vines over 80 years old in Elciego, this wine represents a true lesson in longevity and distinction. With a minimum of 32 months in oak and extended bottle aging, it offers a tertiary complexity characterized by notes of leather, sweet spices, cocoa, and red fruit compote. It has been consistently praised in the Guía Peñín for its classic elegance and ability to age for several decades.
Barón de Chirel
Born in 1986, it is considered Rioja's first "signature wine." It arises from an extreme selection of very low-yielding grapes from parcels between 80 and 110 years old. It combines power, contemporary expression, and deep minerality, consistently winning awards in prestigious international competitions such as the Decanter World Wine Awards.
Pioneering White Wines in D.O. Rueda
In the 70s, Marqués de Riscal extended its innovative vision to the Castilian plateau, being the fundamental driving force behind the creation of the Rueda Denomination of Origin. Its single-varietal Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc wines offer freshness, marked citrus acidity, and herbal nuances of immense elegance, ideal for pairing with fish, seafood, and rice dishes.
Organic Viticulture and Future
Marqués de Riscal has transformed all its vineyards in the D.O. Rueda region and a large part of its wine heritage in Elciego to organic certification. This deep respect for the ecosystem, the rejection of synthetic pesticides, and the preservation of biodiversity ensure that each vintage is a pure, honest, and vibrant expression of the Rioja Alavesa terroir.
