Gewürztraminer
Exoticism • Spices • High Aromatic Expression
"A bottled perfume that challenges the senses. Gewürztraminer is the most opulent white variety, capable of transporting us to rose gardens and spice markets with just one sip."
The Science of Alpine Perfume
The Gewürztraminer grape is not just a wine, it is a chromatic mutation of the Savagnin Rose family. Its name, which combines the German term Gewürz (spicy) with its geographical origin in Tramin (Termeno), defines its identity: a white wine with low acidity but very high phenolic concentration. Although its historical epicenter is in Alto Adige DOC, it has reached legendary levels in the clay-limestone soils of Alsace.
At La Cava Shop, we select examples that avoid alcoholic heaviness through high-altitude viticulture. Producers such as Nals Margreid and Franz Haas manage to bottle a crystalline freshness that balances the grape's characteristic almost oily (glyceric) texture, offering a sensory profile of lychees, ginger, and rose petals.
Terroir and Structure
This grape demands cool climates so as not to lose its delicate acidity. In our section of Italian high-altitude wines, Gewürztraminer stands out for its minerality, moving away from cloyingly sweet versions to offer a dry and spicy finish.
The Art of Pairing
It is the ideal technical accompaniment for dishes with complex spices. Its generous body supports the spiciness of Thai cuisine and the intensity of washed-rind cheeses, such as Munster. For a visual pairing guide, we recommend the resources from Wine Folly.
Sommelier's Protocol
Temperature and Service
A common mistake is to serve Gewürztraminer excessively chilled. To appreciate its notes of elderflower and white pepper, the ideal temperature is 10°C to 12°C. If it is too cold, the unctuous texture that makes it famous disappears from the palate.
Aging Potential
Although freshness is its greatest virtue when young, wines meant for aging based on Gewürztraminer develop fascinating notes of honey, hydrocarbons, and dried apricot after 5 or 7 years in the bottle.
