Puglia Wines
Southern Italy • Sun • Structure • Tradition
"Puglia is the 'heel' of the Italian boot. A land bathed by two seas where ancient olive groves coexist with vineyards that produce some of the most powerful, structured, and seductive red wines of the Mediterranean."
The Renaissance of Apulian Winemaking
The region of Puglia (Apulia) has moved beyond being a giant of bulk production to lead the segment of boutique wines in Italy. Its soils, technically known as Terra Rossa (rich in iron oxide and with a calcareous base), allow for exceptional drainage and mineral concentration, which translates into longevity and body.
At La Cava Shop, our curation focuses on leading wineries like Tenute Girolamo, which manage to tame the southern sun to offer an elegant and balanced Primitivo di Manduria. According to the Consorzio di Tutela del Primitivo, the microclimate of the Salento peninsula, surrounded by the Adriatic and Ionian seas, is vital for refreshing the vineyards during the nights, allowing for perfect phenolic ripening.
Reds: The Power of Salento
Our red wines from Puglia stand out for the Negroamaro variety. Its name, which alludes to its dark color and firm tannin, is the base for complex wines with notes of cocoa and dried Mediterranean herbs, typical of the Salice Salentino appellation.
Whites: Freshness from Valle d'Itria
Although reds dominate, white wines made with Fiano Minutolo and Bombino Bianco offer a different side of Puglia: citrusy, floral, and highly mineral, ideal for pairing with seafood cuisine.
Puglia Reference Guide
What differentiates Puglia wines from those in the north?
Unlike Piedmont or Tuscany, Puglia offers "sun-drenched" wines. This means higher natural alcohol content, sweeter tannins, and a presence of jammy black fruit. These wines are more approachable from their youth. To delve deeper into these regional differences, we recommend consulting the Vini di Puglia guide.
How to achieve an authentic pairing?
A robust Primitivo requires hearty dishes: from lamb ragù to aged cheeses. On the other hand, a Negroamaro with its characteristic spicy touch is the ideal companion for grilled meats and dishes with pepper and aromatic herbs.
