Friuli-Venezia Giulia

Northeast Italy • Mineral Purity • Cult Wines

"Where the Alps meet the Adriatic. Friuli is a purist's haven, a border region that has transformed white wine into a work of technical precision."

The Ponca Terroir and the Adriatic Breeze

Located in the far northeast of Italy, the region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia is internationally recognized for producing the country's most structured and long-lived white wines. Its secret lies in the ponca, a soil composed of alternating layers of marl and sandstone that provides a distinctive salinity. According to the Consorzio Tutela Vini Collio, this microclimate, protected by the Julian Alps, allows for slow ripening that preserves malic acidity.

At La Cava Shop, our Friuli curation goes beyond the conventional. We explore everything from high-precision technical Pinot Grigio, like the examples from Kriss Wines, to the recovery of ancestral varieties such as Ribolla Gialla. This region is also the birthplace of the modern movement of white wines with prolonged maceration, or "Orange Wines," a technique validated by experts at Wine Searcher for its tannic complexity.

Collio and Colli Orientali

These denominations represent Friuli's "Grand Cru." Here, the Friulano varietal (formerly known as Tocai) develops its characteristic bitter almond note and silky body. It is the epicenter of border viticulture, influenced by the Slovenian enological school.

Minimum Intervention Wines

Friuli has led the natural wine revolution in Italy. Local producers have perfected the use of amphorae and spontaneous fermentations, achieving white wines that evolve for decades in the bottle, challenging the traditional perception of immediate freshness.

Tasting Protocol for the Northeast

Temperature Management

For Friuli whites, avoid excessively low temperatures. A reserve Pinot Grigio is best expressed at 12°C, while a macerated white requires 14°C-15°C to display its tannic structure without aggressive bitterness.

Border Gastronomic Harmony

The high minerality of these wines demands dishes with umami. The historical pairing is Prosciutto di San Daniele, whose sweetness balances the salinity of the ponca. They also harmonize with white asparagus risottos and fatty Adriatic fish.
