Frequently Asked Questions About Blend Wines
What is the technical difference between a blend and a varietal?
A varietal must contain at least 85% of a single grape by law. A blend does not have this restriction and allows combining grape varieties in any proportion to enhance virtues and mitigate natural deficiencies of the terroir.
How should red blend wines be paired?
Due to their complexity, blends harmonize excellently with game red meats, grilled cuts, pastas with slow-cooked sauces, and hard cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano.
Can a blend include white and red grapes?
Yes. Although less common, there are famous blends (such as in some Rhône areas) where a small proportion of white grape (like Viognier) is added to Syrah to provide freshness and set the color.
