El Enemigo: Wines from Mendoza and Gualtallary

El Enemigo

Mendoza • Gualtallary • Casa Vigil

The Cabernet Franc Revolution in South America

El Enemigo has transformed the global perception of Argentine winemaking under the tutelage of visionary winemaker Alejandro Vigil and historian Adrianna Catena, in Mendoza. Inspired by the mysticism of the Divine Comedy and a reverential respect for ancient high-altitude vineyards, they created Casa Vigil in Chachingo, Cruz de Piedra, later expanding their boundaries to the wild slopes of Gualtallary in the Uco Valley, more than 1,470 meters above sea level.

It is here that Cabernet Franc found its true spiritual home in the Southern Hemisphere. By challenging the historical hegemony of Malbec, the winery demonstrated that Mendoza's calcium carbonate-rich soils could yield red wines of tension, elegance, and mineral verve capable of standing up to the most legendary labels of the Old World, achieving perfect 100-point scores from international critics.

At La Cava Shop, our collection of premium red wines highlights El Enemigo labels as essential collector's items for the most discerning collectors and connoisseurs worldwide.

Serving Suggestions and Moments

El Enemigo and Gran Enemigo wines possess superb gastronomic versatility thanks to their strictly dry profile, brilliant acidity, and elegant tannic structure. These are creations designed for fine dining and for transforming everyday moments into unforgettable milestones:

  • Gourmet BBQ: The structure and acidity of their red wines spectacularly cut through the fat of premium grilled cuts like Rib Eye, Tomahawk, or flank steak, magically complementing the smoky aromas of wood.
  • Romantic Dinner: Opening a Cabernet Franc or a Malbec from the winery adds an air of bohemian, intellectual sophistication and deep intimacy to celebrate anniversaries or special evenings.
  • High-Level Business: Presenting a bottle of El Enemigo at a business lunch projects deep wine knowledge, excellent taste, and an infallible standard of distinction for closing high-stakes transactions.
  • The Perfect Gift: A highly coveted and respected label. Gifting a single-vineyard Gran Enemigo (Gualtallary, El Cepillo, or Agrelo) is the ultimate present for collectors, directors, and lovers of cult viticulture.
  • Special Celebration: Whether it's a professional achievement, a festive gathering, or a grand family milestone, these bottles elevate the atmosphere and frame banquets superbly.

Exclusive Pairing

As refined, intense, and dry reds, they pair ideally with game meats (wild boar, venison), roasted poultry with fine herbs, rosemary lamb chops, and slow-cooked stews. Their remarkable mineral freshness masterfully balances pastas with dense mushroom or truffle sauces, wild mushroom risottos, and cheese boards of strong personality (such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Gruyère, or aged Manchego).

frequently asked questions (FAQS)

What makes Gran Enemigo an exceptional aging wine?

Its structure is based on a low pH, vibrant natural acidity, and a high concentration of mature yet fine tannins, allowing it to evolve for over 20 years in the bottle and gain subtle nuances of great earthy and intellectual complexity.

What is the origin winery and where are these wines produced?

Their specific origin is the province of Mendoza, Argentina. They are produced at Casa Vigil, a winery located in the historic area of Chachingo (Maipú), although their most prestigious grapes come from the cold terroir of Gualtallary, in the Uco Valley, irrigated by pure water from the Andean snowmelt.

Are El Enemigo wines dry, semi-dry, or sweet?

All red wines from the El Enemigo and Gran Enemigo lines are strictly dry. They lack cloying residual sweetness; their lusciousness, roundness, and magnificent mouthfeel are exclusively a consequence of impeccable vineyard management, optimal phenolic ripeness of the grapes, and refined aging in French barrels and century-old foudres.

Is it necessary to decant these wines before serving?

Due to their high fruit concentration and imposing tannic structure, it is strongly recommended to decant El Enemigo wines for at least 30 to 45 minutes before serving. This oxygenates the liquid and helps to open up their complex aromatic layers of spices, graphite, and forest fruits.
